Baseball Names - and How They Got That Way! Part XI

Baseball Names - and How They Got That Way! Part XI
The words and phrases are spoken and written day after day, year after year - generally without any wonderment as to how they became part of the language. All have a history, a story. For those of you who liked Part I, Part II, Part III and all the others and wanted more, here is more.
As always, reactions and suggestions always welcome.

CHOO-CHOO COLEMAN A catcher for the New York Mets during their early struggling years, Coleman is a case in point of the fact that not all things can be traced back to their origins. Once during a television interview, Coleman was asked how he got his nickname. He responded, "I don't know." He followed this up some time later with another gem. Casey Stengel, a bit frustrated by the ineptitude of the Mets, decided to return to basics. He held up a baseball during a locker-room meeting and said, "This is a baseball." Coleman interrupted, "Wait, you're going too fast."
CLOWN PRINCE OF BASEBALL Al Schacht performed for only three seasons as a member of the Washington Senators (1919-21), but he still was able to make a mighty reputation on the baseball field. Schacht was a comic and his routines centered on the foibles and eccentricities of the National Pastime. It was said that nobody did it better, and that's why Schacht was dubbed the Clown Prince.
"THE COUNT" - Sparky Lyle, handlebar mustache and lordy ways contributed to his look and nickname.
CRAB, THE The middle man in the famed Tinker to Evers to Chance double-play combination, Johnny Evers was a pugnacious and combative ball player and manager. Admitted to the Hall of Fame in 1946, Evers had an 18-year playing career and managed for three other years. His ingoing personality and bench-jockeying ability gave him his nickname on merit.
Pitcher Jesse Burkett earned the name for his surly disposition and also the peculiar manner of his stride.
"CRIME DOG" Fred McGriff was given this name by ESPN sportscaster Chris Berman, a play on McGruff, a cartoon dog developed for American police to raise children's awareness on crime prevention.
CROW, THE A fairly little man with a screechy voice, Frank Crosetti fit his nickname. He played shortstop for the New York Yankees for 17 years and then had a long stint as a coach with the team.
"CY" His full name was Denton True Young. His nickname was given to him by a young catcher helping to warm him up. The backstop reported that Young pitched as fast as a "cyclone." Reporters shortened the nickname to Cy.
Young was still in great pitching shape until he was 44 years old. He credited his daily chores and farm work for giving him strength.
CY THE SECOND Irving Melrose Young pitched for six years in the major leagues concurrently with Denton True Young--the storied "Cy" Young who won 508 games in his career. Irving Young only won 62, while losing 94, but the fact that he had the same last name and pitched at the same time as the great Cy Young earned Irving his nickname (see CY YOUNG AWARD).
CY THE THIRD In 1908, a year in which Cy Young won 21 games and compiled a 1.26 earned-run average, Harley E. Young made it to the major leagues. He pitched only 752 plus innings, losing three games and winning none. But because his last name and the time he played reminded fans of the great Cy Young, Harley was called Cy the Third.
CY YOUNG AWARD Baseball's award to the top pitcher in each league originated in 1956. The rationale was that pitchers were at a disadvantage in Most Valuable Player balloting. The award gets its name from the Hall of Famer who pitched for 22 years, winning more games than any other performer in baseball history (508). Young also started more games, completed more games, pitched more innings than any other pitcher in history. He is fourth on the all-time list in strikeouts and shutouts. His career accomplishments personified the value of a pitcher to a team and underlined the reason for naming the award for the top pitcher after him.
DAFFINESS BOYS Also known as Dem Brooklyn Bums, the 1926 Brooklyn Dodgers wrought havoc on friend and foe alike. The hotshot of the team was freeswinging, slump-shouldered Babe Herman, dubbed the Incredible Hoiman, who bragged that among his stupendous feats was stealing second base with the bases loaded. Once Herman was one of a troika of Dodger base runners who found themselves all on third base at the same time. A Dodger rookie turned to Brooklyn manager "Uncle" Wilbert Robinson on the bench. "You call that playing baseball?" "Uncle" Robbie responded, "Leave them alone. That's the first time they've been together all year."
DEM BUMS When the Dodgers left Brooklyn in 1957, they left the "bums" behind. A beloved nickname in Flatbush, Gowns, Bensonhurst, and Williamsburg, "Bums" was deemed not quite appropriate for the Dodgers of Los Angeles. The nickname originated during the Depression. There was an excitable Brooklyn fan who used to scratch and claw at the chicken wire screen behind home plate at Ebbets Field. One day he was moved to anger at what he perceived as the inadequacies of the home team. "Ya, bum, ya, yez, bums, yez!" he bellowed. From that moment on, "Bums" meant Brooklyn Dodgers. The term was pictorialized by such cartoonists as Willard Mullin, used in newspaper headlines and stories, and capitalized on by the Dodger organization in its image-making for the Brooklyn team.
DIZZY and DAFFY DEAN Perhaps the most famous of all brother acts in the history of sports was "Me and Paul," the dazzling Dean brothers of the St. Louis Cardinals. Jerome Hannah Dean, also known as Jay Hannah Dean and best known as Dizzy, and his kid brother Paul, also known as Daffy, beguiled National League batters in the 1930's and at times drove their own teammates to despair with their madcap antics.
The brothers were born in a rickety shack on a plot of Arkansas ground that their destitute sharecropper parents worked. Dizzy picked cotton for 50 cents a day, and although he later bragged that he learned how to pitch while attending Oklahoma State Teachers College, he only went as far as the second grade in school. In Dizzy, and to a lesser extent Paul, was the sadness and brashness of the American Depression experience. "Some of the things I seen in this here life," Dizzy recalled, "almost cause my ol' heart to bust right through my sweatshirt."
Dizzy grew to be a 6'2", slope-shouldered right hander, a little bigger than his younger brother. Both of them had arms and hands toughened and shaped by the cotton fields. "I never bothered what those guys could hit and couldn't hit," he said. "All I knowed is that they weren't gonna get a-holt of that ball ol' Diz was throwin'."
In 1934, Dizzy and Daffy won 49 games between them. Dizzy won 30--more than any Cardinal pitcher ever. In a doubleheader against Brooklyn, Diz one-hit the Dodgers in the first game and Paul no-hit them in the second game. "If I'd a knowed Paul was gonna do that," Diz said, "I'd a done the same."
Dizzy was actually the zanier brother. Paul went along with his antics and thus was labeled Daffy. Dizzy once wrapped himself in a blanket and made a fire in front of the Cardinal dugout on a day when the temperature was over 100 degrees. Dizzy once led Daffy and a couple of other Cardinals into a staid hotel and announced to the manager that he was under orders to redecorate the place. Armed with ladders, buckets of paint, and brushes, the baseball players proceeded to splash red paint with wild abandon all over the walls of the hotel lobby. Dizzy also once made more than a mild commotion when he told scouts and newspapermen that there was a third Dean "who was throwin' real good at Tulsa." When the tip was checked out, it turned out that the third Dean brother who was "throwing real good" was throwing bags of peanuts--he was a peanut vendor at the Tulsa ball park.
The Deans had bright but relatively brief careers.
Paul won 19 games in both 1934 and 1935 and then lapsed into a journeyman pitcher role, the victim of arm trouble. In the 1937 All-Star Game, Dizzy had a line shot off the bat of Earl Averill carom off his right foot. They found out later that his toe was broken. Diz pitched again and again during the 1937 season, but he was not what he was; the fluid, cotton picking pitching motion was gone. He finished the year with a 13-10 record, and in 1938 he was sent to the Cubs for two pitchers and $200,000. He won seven, lost one, and had an ERA of 1.81, but that was his last year of pitching effectiveness. They were Dizzy and Daffy, but in their time they beguiled baseball fans and intimidated National League hitters.

9-1 on the Homestand

The Yankees did what they were supposed to do this homestand and maintain and 2 1/2 game lead in the AL East. Pitching, pitching, and pitching is what got the Yankees in the win column, much more than the bats. The pitching has been great and Hughes has been the shut down guy in the 8th to get to Mo. So far it is working out better than anyone expected, even Phil! The Yankees now travel to Tampa for a very important series. GO YANKEES!

Demolition Update of Yankee Stadium

The latest word on demolition is: (from JT)

They will be going clockwise starting in RF by Gate 6. The loge level will be removed first and then the upper deck. The original exterior walls will be deconstructed last and pulled inward using bulldozers. Total demo is to be completed by Spring 2010.

The next Parks Dept presentation to the NYC Design Commission will probably be on August 10th (the July meeting was cancelled). We need to have a good turnout/presence for that meeting. The final Parks Dept. design for Heritage Park is scheduled to be finalized/approved by the end of December 2009. The Design Commission has asked Parks to incorporate more historical elements in their revised design.

As Yogi said: "It ain't over 'til it's over"!

Thanks to JT for the information.

HALL OF FAME VOTING GUIDELINES FOR STEROID ERA PLAYERS

INTERNET BASEBALL WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA SETS HALL OF FAME VOTING GUIDELINES FOR STEROID ERA PLAYERS

Los Angeles - On the morning of July 14, 2009, the Base Ball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) voted against forming a committee to establish guidelines for Hall of Fame voting regarding players of the steroid era.

By 3:00 p.m. PST, the Internet Baseball Writers Association of America (IBWAA) had formed a committee to develop guidelines on the matter for the association's members. Results are as follows:

1. IBWAA steroid era Hall of Fame guidelines have been established for IBWAA voting purposes only. It is neither our intention to tell the BBWAA how to run its business, nor to criticize the Hall in any way, shape or form. We do, however, think the BBWAA's decision not to form a committee was silly.

2. Our performance-enhancing drug (PED) guidelines are subject to addendum. It is the expressed intention of the IBWAA to change on the fly, to be inclusive, and to incorporate new members' thoughts into existing policies and procedures.

3. Hall of Fame voting is to be, first and foremost, a democratic process. One person, one vote, with voting by secret ballot, and every vote counting equally.

4. Individual members are free to share his or her votes publicly, and in any form of media available, but are under no obligation to do so. Members choosing to discuss his or her votes publicly do not speak for the IBWAA as a group in so doing.

5. Voters may consider a player's performance-enhancing drug use as part of the selection process. While there is to be no suggestion by the IBWAA to its members that a player's name appearing in the Mitchell Report be considered with any particular degree of severity in the selection process, a member may consider such an appearance as part of his or her thinking.

6. Similarly, voters may consider a player's suspension by Major League Baseball for having tested positive for a banned substance during his career, but are not required to do so.

7. The IBWAA strongly suggests that while qualities of sportsmanship and character be considered as part of the equation, members should endeavor not to be influenced by rumors, hearsay, unsubstantiated items found to be in publication, a player's ethnic background or physical appearance as voting criteria.

Participating members of the new IBWAA committee include Kevin Braun, freelance writer and former copy editor at Atlanta Journal-Constitution; Howard Cole, editor, BaseballSavvy.com; Tom Hoffarth, Media/General Columnist, Los Angeles Daily News; Ron Kaplan, sports and features editor, New Jersey Jewish News; and Dave Nichols, editor, Nationals News Network.

Launched July 4, 2009, the IBWAA was created by Cole to organize and promote the growing online baseball media, and to serve as an alternative voice to the Base Ball Writers Association of America.

Association memberships are open to any and all Internet baseball writers, with a yearly membership of $10.

For more information on the IBWAA, please visit the temporary webpage here, http://www.baseballsavvy.com/internetbaseballwriters.html. In the coming months, the IBWAA can be found at www.InternetBaseballWriters.com. Howard Cole can be reached at baseballsavvy@aol.com.

Yanks' stars show up for community service week

Yanks' stars show up for community service week

By JAY COHEN,
AP Sports Writer

NEW YORK (AP) Alex Rodriguez threw the ball high into the air and 10-year-old Jack Zittel came barreling toward the three-time AL MVP. He hauled in the popup with a nice running catch, earning some praise from the smiling New York Yankees slugger.

Zittel grinned wildly as he hustled to get back in line.

"I was thinking 'Oh my God, A-Rod just said atta boy. Oh my God,'" Zittel said.

The streaking Yankees are earning praise on and off the field this week, with all of their biggest stars participating in an ambitious community service project titled HOPE Week, for Helping Others Persevere & Excel.

Rodriguez, pitchers Andy Pettitte and Joba Chamberlain and hitting coach Kevin Long were in Greenwich Village on Tuesday to honor Tom Ellenson, a sixth-grader with Cerebral Palsy who uses a motorized wheelchair to move around but was voted most valuable person by his champion Little League team. They had lunch with Ellenson before conducting a clinic for him and his teammates on their home field.

Ellenson's father, Richard, who invented a device that helps Tom communicate, was taken back by the Yankees' generosity.

"It means the world has magic," he said. "It means that people understand other people. It means that my son and I are living the American dream."

Manager Joe Girardi, closer Mariano Rivera, second baseman Robinson Cano and outfielder Melky Cabrera crammed into a small Washington Heights apartment Monday to pay tribute to a couple who have opened their home to neighborhood children for lessons in leadership and community.

Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira are scheduled to participate in Wednesday's event for an Army veteran with Lou Gehrig's Disease and his wife, with two more projects scheduled for Thursday and Friday.

"We want to go to them and be a part of something without taking them out of their element," said Yankees media relations director Jason Zillo, who came up with the idea for a week's worth of community service activities in the offseason.

"We've really stepped outside the box, I think, and to do it five straight days - it's not like 'Well, pick one a week.'"

Most of the Yankees' organization is involved in some way with the project, which also includes efforts to raise money for some worthwhile groups.

HOPE Week has generated some positive publicity for a franchise in need of goodwill after facing criticism for the high ticket prices at its new stadium and Rodriguez's admission in spring training that he used steroids when he played for the Texas Rangers.

"I think we'll get more out of this because we didn't think about it that way," said Zillo, pointing out the project was being planned long before the franchise's PR problems this year.

Rodriguez, Pettitte, Chamberlain and Long all seemed to enjoy themselves Tuesday. While A-Rod ran the Little Leaguers through fielding drills, Pettitte and Chamberlain gave the players pointers on pitching at another station and Long worked on their swings at the other end of the field.

"I think the lesson for us is not just about giving money and just putting your name to something, but it's actually about coming out and giving up your time and opening up your heart," said Rodriguez, whose two-run single helped the Yankees beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4 on Tuesday night for their fifth straight win. "We also hope that other people in the community get involved because one thing we can all give is time."

Yanks' Fortunes Improve with Bullpen

Yanks' fortunes improve with bullpen

Relievers' consistency turns sluggish start into June surge

By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com

NEW YORK -- Derek Jeter made a few wrong turns during his first weekend at the new Yankee Stadium, winding up in the players' dining room as he tried to navigate the maze back to his locker.
Like their captain, the rest of the Yankees also had to find their way in the early going, adapting to their new Bronx home and to each other. But the Bombers have finally adjusted, shrugging off early-season struggles and injuries to finish the first half in prime position for a playoff push.

With one of the game's most patient and productive offenses and a bullpen that is finally beginning to take shape, the Yankees have wrapped up the first half right in the thick of the race, despite the fact that they still have yet to post their first victory against the Red Sox this season.
Club MVP: Mark Teixeira was batting under .200 as late as May 12 and recently endured a homerless stretch spanning 95 at-bats, which only further illustrates how important he has been when everything is going right. Teixeira earned the second All-Star selection of his career after shrugging off a slow start to take his place as one of the American League's most dangerous hitters. The Yankees have also marveled at his run-saving defense at first base and are thirsty for more production in the second half.
Call him "Ace": Yes, manager Joe Girardi likes to call Alfredo Aceves "Ace," but that's not what this category is about. There have been some ups and downs, but over the first half, CC Sabathia has stepped into his $161 million obligation as the Yankees' No. 1 pitcher. There have been a few too many clunkers -- most recently a six-run outing on July 2 against the Mariners -- but Sabathia has proven willing to run the ball deep into games and leads the Yankees in complete games (two) and innings pitched (128 1/3).
Greatest strength: In Spring Training, general manager Brian Cashman envisioned a patient, veteran lineup seeing a lot of pitches and wearing down pitchers, forcing them to attack the strike zone. That has largely come to fruition, as the Yankees lead the Major Leagues in runs scored, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, OPS and walks. Alex Rodriguez's return has lengthened the lineup, and having Jorge Posada back is a big boost over his fill-ins. The Yankees strike out less often than most AL clubs and have gone into motion a little more than expected, with Brett Gardner and Jeter pacing the club in stolen bases.
Biggest problem: The Yankees have some questions to answer in their starting rotation. Chien-Ming Wang is 1-6 and on the disabled list for the second time this season, and it is becoming increasingly apparent that they might not be able to count on the pitcher who won 46 games over the past three seasons. Joba Chamberlain has also been challenged to attack the zone more and has shown the requisite growing pains of a 23-year-old starter trying to harness his stuff, while Andy Pettitte can't seem to figure out how to pitch effectively at Yankee Stadium.
Biggest surprise: Out of nowhere, Phil Hughes has rescued the Yankees' bullpen and succeeded in doing what several candidates -- including the envisioned eighth-inning men, Brian Bruney and Damaso Marte -- could not. (Remember Edwar Ramirez and Jose Veras?) The plan was never to make Hughes into a full-fledged reliever, but like Chamberlain in '07, the need was there. Hughes' place for '09 is in the bullpen, and if he stays healthy, the Yankees can still get him up to 100 innings or so this year and not hinder his development.
Team needs: Hughes' success has taken away some urgency, but if Cashman makes a move at the Trade Deadline, there's a great probability it would be for a bullpen arm. No one knows if or when Marte will return from his exile to Tampa, Fla., and Bruney has been unable to recapture his command after serving two stints on the DL. The Yankees have patched it together with a revolving door of help from Triple-A, but there is room for improvement. The bench was bolstered in late June with the acquisition of Eric Hinske from the Pirates, though that was a reaction to the loss of Xavier Nady to Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery.
He said it: "I can't look Mariano Rivera in the face and say, 'I'm going to weaken your bullpen right now for the future.' It's a balancing act. It's a tough one. It's not easy. You try to make the best choices every day, and you revisit them every day." -- Cashman
Mark your calendar: The Yankees will come back from the All-Star break to tackle a 10-game homestand at Yankee Stadium that includes Old-Timers' Day on July 19 and a July 23 makeup game against the A's, playing a contest that was washed out back on April 20. From there, it's back on the road for a nine-game swing to Tampa Bay, Chicago and Toronto.
Fearless second-half prediction: The 2009 Yankees are a playoff team. The AL East would love to make that a false statement for a second successive season, but there's little reason to think the division or the Wild Card are not within New York's grasp. The Yankees don't match up well with the Red Sox, but they'll will find a way to be playing in October. They might even beat the Sox at least once in their remaining 10 games.

Yankees Post Game Alert for July 17

The Yankees ended their 3 game losing streak by defeating the Tigers 5 to 3 during a rain delayed win at the Stadium. Burnett gave up 3 runs and Hughes pitched 2 scoreless innings striking out 6 and picked up the win. Mark Teixeira hit a 3 run home run to put the Yankees ahead for good. The Yankees stayed 3 games back of Boston as the Red Sox won their game. The Yankees have a day game today against the same Tigers as CC tries to make it 2 in a row for the Yankees. GO YANKEES!

New York Yankees Postgame Alert for July 12

The Yankees head into the All-Star break on a very low note. Even with key players absent from the Angels lineup, the Yankees could once again not overcome the mighty Angels and got swept over the weekend. The Yankees continue to show that they cannot win the big game this season. Going for 0 for 8 against Boston and now getting swept against the Angels is not what the Yankees had in mind. Now they must get ready for the 2nd half of the season. The Rays are right behind them and the Red Sox now have a 3 game lead in the AL East. I am sure Cashman will be working the phones over the break to see if there are any moves to be made.

New York Yankees Postgame Alert for July 7

Sabathia shined as the Yankees defeated the Twins in Minnesota. The Yankees amassed 16 hits with their 10 runs in the 10-2 win. Sabathia moved to 8-5 on the season and the Yankees move back to 15 games over .500. The next goal has to be 20 games over .500. With the Red Sox winning as well, the Yankees remain 1 game back in the AL East. Cano finally had a hit with runners in scoring position but he continues to struggle at the plate. Teixiera had 4 hits and his bat continues to be hot. The Yankees need to continue to stay hot on this long road trip before the All-Star break. Go Yankees! It would be great to move into the lead in the AL East before the break and have the 2nd best record in baseball behind Joe Torre's Dodgers.

New York Yankees Postgame Alert for July 6

Well the comeback almost came to light, but the Yankees fell short 7-6 at the stadium before heading to Minnesota tomorrow. Pettitte dropped to 8-4 on the season as the Yankees got hit hard early. They tried to stage a rally, even having bases loaded several times, but could not come through. Wang was placed on the 15-DL with his shoulder injury and it will be wait and see with him at this point. I do not expect a start from him until well after the All-Star Break at best. Lets hope the Yankees can head into Minnesota where the Twins have been playing great baseball.

New York Yankees Postgame Alert for July 5

The Yankees bats continued to be hot in a game that Joba did not pitch well in. The offense was needed and Joba struggled most of this game. A 4 run lead quickly turned into Toronto favor as they took a 6-4. The Yankees had to battle back once again and got bit hits all around. Albaledejo got the victory to go to 3-1 on the season and Aceves picked up his first save of the year. The Yankees finish this series with the Blue Jays tomorrow before the All-Star Game. With several Yankees in the lineup, it should be a fun game. Lets hope the Yankees can grab the victory tomorrow before the All-Star break. Go Yankees!

New York Yankees Postgame Alert for July 4

Happy Birthday Mr. Steinbrenner!!!! Jorge came through in extra-innings at the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays 6 to 5 at the stadium. 46,000 witnessed the Yankees comeback. A big homerun by Johnny Damon late tied the game up. Cano is still struggling and the bunt on the 3-0 count caught everybody by surprise, especially Mark Teixeira was never ran from 2nd. I am sure Joe will have words for Mr. Cano, who needs to wake up and fast! A-Rod, who was intentionally walked, scored the winning run when Jorge connected on an off-speed pitch he delivered to center field for the win. Keep it up Yankees and take game 4 of this 4 game series. Beating Roy is a huge feat for the Yankees. Take care..........Brad
