STEINER SPORTS INKS EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH MARK TEIXEIRA

For Immediate Release
STEINER SPORTS INKS EXCLUSIVE DEAL WITH
MARK TEIXEIRA
AL MVP Candidate Joins Teammates Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Andy Pettitte, Jorge Posada, Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes and Manager Joe Girardi as Part of Steiner’s Exclusive Roster
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. October 29, 2009 – Mark Teixeira, the New York Yankees first baseman and AL MVP candidate, has agreed to an exclusive collectibles and autograph deal with Steiner Sports Memorabilia, announced today by Steiner’s founder and CEO Brandon Steiner.
In what will be the first-ever Teixeira memorabilia line, the collection will include signed baseballs, photos, jerseys, bats, hats, and batting helmets, among other items. In addition, Steiner will leverage their Yankees-Steiner Collectibles partnership to offer Teixeira’s game-used jerseys, bats, batting gloves and several other unique collectibles.
“Steiner Sports is extremely excited to add New York’s All-Star first baseman as part of our exclusive roster,” said Brandon Steiner, founder and CEO. “We look forward to working with Mark, an all-star both on and off the field, on many of our upcoming projects.”
“Agreeing on a deal with Steiner Sports is the perfect fit as they’re the leader in the collectibles industry,” said Teixeira. “I’m excited to join many of my teammates who have had great success and a long lasting relationship with this first-class organization.”
Plans are also underway for Steiner to partner with Teixeira on his charitable endeavors, which will be announced towards the start of next season.

Yankees Tie up the Series at 1-1

Last night I was able to witness a great pitching matchup between Burnett and Pedro. Both pitchers needed a great performance and both delivered. AJ was on with his curveball, which he set up his fastball. Pedro was up to his usual stuff with keeping guys off balance and pitching "smart". Though Pedro does not have the velocity anymore, he can still pinpoint his pitches and he was hitting all his spots. Matsui's HR was huge, simply huge. After Teixeira's HR to tie it, the crowd needed a boost, and Matsui supplied it. The Yankees never looked back. Though I do not agree with the the move to have Mo pitch in the 8th and 9th, it did work and the Yankees tied the series up at 1. The series now moves to Philly where Andy will have to once again pitch a game. The Phillies now have the home-field advantage in this now, best of 5 series.

NYC Hearing Update from October 26, 2009

THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED!!!

The Hearing was a GREAT success, resulting in official disapproval of the severely flawed preliminary plan for the old Yankee Stadium Site!!!

The Parks Department has been firmly directed to overhaul the park design - either saving the Gate - or proving why they can not!

Below is the Committee's very well received presentation

As presented by Cindy Jones

Committee to Commemorate

Old Yankee Stadium

______________________________

Public Design Commission Hearing

New York City Hall

October 26, 2009

______________________________

Thank you so very much for this great honor & opportunity to speak on behalf of people around the country, who so passionately want to pay tribute to the greatest Stadium in the American history….America’s Coliseum…Old Yankee Stadium.

As Mayor Bloomberg reported only last year, in the "Official Yankee Stadium Retrospective" Old Yankee Stadium is one of New York's three most asked-about New York City international icons, along with Empire State Building, and the Empire State Building. Wherever he travels around the world, he said, people always ask about [Old] Yankee Stadium.

Dozens of international luminaries, including presidents, governors, and celebrities of every type - joined the Mayor in this book - one of many hundreds written on the history of the Stadium - voicing how very highly regarded the Stadium is around the world.

Indeed, it is Old Yankee Stadium's unmatched prominence, that compelled me to fly in this morning from my home state of Virginia, to encourage and plead to the great City of New York to "properly preserve and celebrate" this national landmark and treasure.

Commissioners, the Committee to Commemorate Old Yankee Stadium

request that you please Save Gate 2,

The exciting reality is that Gate 2 IS overwhelmingly original - as the two photos of Gate 2 before you make unmistakeably clear - one from the 1930's and the other taken just this year. The City's original belief that Gate 2 was NOT original was wrong.

And, moreover, Gate 2 is PERFECTLY located between New and Old Yankee Stadiums -- providing a magnificent architectural, and even spiritual, Gateway, connecting our past to our future.

As Bronx County Historian, Dr. Lloyd Ultan, observed in Paul Goldberger's recent article in the New Yorker citing authoritative criticisms of preliminary park design:

“What’s missing from the park plan is the architecture of the Stadium itself.”

- later stating that a large, tangible part of the original stadium is needed to effectively communicate the original Stadium's majesty & size, like ruins of antiquity so powerfully do.

Architectural experts Rick Bell, Jeff Bianco, Phil Reina - along with so many others - the preliminary design as "lacking authenticity".

In fact, neither Babe, nor Lou, saw ANYTHING included in the current proposal!

BUT, they saw Gate 2!!

_____________________

Yankee Stadium historians across the country - including Bill Jenkinson and the City's own Dr. Ultan - emphatically agree, adding that a meaningful tangible memory from the Stadium's most glorious days is needed to properly record its irreplaceable preeminence.

As Paul Doherty, a leading authority on Yankee Stadium, put it:

"Gate 2 will serve as a cultural lamp post to the great eras of New York City's sporting dominance - second only to the Roman Coliseum in its importance to the overall history of world sports."

The essential point we all must remember is that:

If Gate 2 is not saved, nothing of the Stadium's most glorious era and architecture will be!

We also respectfully request, Commissioners, that the Old Yankee Stadium Site be called "Old Yankee Stadium Park", rather than the overly common and nondescript "Heritage Field", or "Park" of which there are so very many across the country - including one at the Cleveland Indians' Stadium right up the road in the Yankees' own AL East!

"Old Yankee Stadium Park" is clearly a far better name - one that truly "celebrates the site's rich history", as is the charter and goal of the Commission. Paul Goldberger, the renowned New York historic architect - and the City's Board Member for the National Trust for Historic Preservation - also disapproves of the name. Dr. Ultan emphatically joins him, along with preeminent historians and Baseball fans of the Stadium across the City, and country.

For similarly compelling reasons, we request the baseball area of the new park be called "Babe Ruth Memorial Field" - to both tribute New York's greatest and beloved sports hero, and to replace the original "Babe Ruth Memorial Baseball Filed" - recently destroyed to make way for New Yankee Stadium. Your very distinguished Art Commission predecessor, Williams Adams Delano, was a leading participant in the creation of Babe Ruth Memorial Field, created sixty years ago, as a "permanent" tribute to New York's (still) most beloved and immortal sports figure - New York's great Babe Ruth.

__________________

In closing Commissioners, I quote another New York great, Jackie Kennedy, who did so very much for preserving this great City's cultural treasures, and whose statement forty years ago so perfectly addresses why we must save Gate 2:

"Is it not cruel to let New York die by degrees, stripped of all her proudest moments, until there will be nothing left of history and beauty to inspire our children? If they are not inspired by the past of our City, where will they find the strength to fight for her future? Americans care about their past, but, for short term gain, they ignore it and tear down everything that matters. This is the time to take a stand and reverse the tide."

Please, Commissioners, save Gate 2, at "Old Yankee Stadium Park" - not only for Babe & Lou … but, most of all, for all our children and loved ones - and all those who follow us - so they can see and even touch "The House That Ruth Built" - the greatest Stadium in our nation's history- "Old Yankee Stadium.".

That Artful Dodgers Voice by Mark Yost

By MARK YOST
Los Angeles
The Major League Baseball playoffs begin tonight, and with them will come justifiable criticism of some of the abysmal sports commentary that regularly trudges across the airwaves. For a refreshing change, I would direct listeners to the smooth tenor voice and pithy commentary of Vin Scully. This is Mr. Scully's 60th year in the Los Angeles Dodgers broadcast booth, and he is nothing short of the best play-by-play man working in sports today.
The pregame banter for the first of three recent Rockies-Dodgers games was filled with information you could have gleaned from the morning paper or a blog. The Dodgers needed just one win to clinch the National League West (which they did Saturday night); a Phillies loss helped the Dodgers secure the best record in the National League. When Mr. Scully finally took the mike, he distinguished himself in just one sentence.
View Full Image
Randy Jones

"It's a very pleasant Friday night here in Los Angeles," he said, telling radio listeners from Petaluma to Panama City something they couldn't possibly have known unless they were here at the game. More important, Mr. Scully, who's 81, wasn't just setting the atmosphere but building a rapport with his audience. "I don't announce," he told me in an interview before Saturday's game. "I have a conversation."
But once the game starts, Mr. Scully is all business. From the first pitch, you need the skills of a court stenographer to keep up with the facts and figures—all interesting and relevant—that he weaves effortlessly into a dialogue that's nothing short of poetic.
For instance, he noted that the Colorado Rockies had been 15½ games back in June and red hot coming into this series. He then reminded listeners that the Rockies were batting a paltry .168 against left-handed pitchers, like Dodgers starter Randy Wolf. Those aren't off-the-cuff remarks, but indicative of the preparation Mr. Scully puts into every broadcast.
Unlike many of today's commentators, he understands that what has happened is more important than what might happen. Thus, when Ryan Spilborghs came up to bat in the first inning, Mr. Scully said: "Rockies with runners at second and third. Torrealba, the butter-and-egg man, just delivered a double to drive in two runs. Wolf has made 30 pitches so far in the first inning and the Rockies lead two to nothing."
Mr. Scully didn't come out of the womb delivering such eloquent and informative commentary. He was tutored by legendary broadcaster Red Barber. In 1950, when he was only 23, Mr. Scully joined his mentor in the Brooklyn Dodgers broadcast booth and learned to never root for the home team, not to socialize with the ballplayers, not to listen to other broadcasters, and to know when to shut up. "Sometimes, nothing says it better than the roar of the crowd," Mr. Scully said.
Although he spent just four years at Mr. Barber's elbow, they were formative years. "In many ways, I was the son he never had," Mr. Scully recalled fondly.
In 1954, Mr. Scully became the sole Dodgers broadcaster. When the team moved to L.A. in 1958, the native New Yorker went with them. It was in Los Angeles that he forever put his imprint on this team and this city.
Mr. Scully credits the transistor radio with his early popularity. In fact, fans from the era told me that so many people brought radios with them to the team's first West Coast home, the cavernous Los Angeles Coliseum, that broadcast engineers were vexed by feedback from Mr. Scully's own voice.
Ross Miller, a 55-year-old Los Angeles pediatrician and Dodgers season-ticket holder, was one of those fans who grew up with Mr. Scully in his ear. "What's amazing, what really speaks to Vinny's talent, is the fact that he was describing a game we were watching with our own eyes, yet his words painted the picture so much better." Indeed, sitting in the Dodgers press box, I found myself averting my eyes from the field, preferring to let Mr. Scully describe the action.
The broadcaster insists that he never comes to the ballpark with any prepared lines, which makes some of his legendary calls all the more remarkable. In 1956, when Don Larsen went into the last inning of the only perfect game in World Series history, Mr. Scully said: "Let's all take a deep breath as we go to the most dramatic ninth inning in the history of baseball." In 1974, when Hank Aaron stepped to the plate to break Babe Ruth's home run record, Mr. Scully noted: "A black man is getting a standing ovation in the Deep South for breaking a record of an all-time baseball idol." In 1988, when Kirk Gibson hit a walk-off home run to win the first game of the World Series, the broadcaster said: "In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened."
But perhaps his greatest call of all time came during Sandy Koufax's perfect game: "Three times in his sensational career has Sandy Koufax walked out to the mound to pitch a fateful ninth where he turned in a no-hitter. But tonight, September the ninth, nineteen-hundred and sixty-five, he made the toughest walk of his career, I'm sure, because through eight innings he has pitched a perfect game."
Later in the inning, he said, "there's twenty-nine thousand people in the ballpark and a million butterflies." And when Mr. Koufax struck out Harvey Kuenn to end the game, Mr. Scully simply said, "Swung on and missed, a perfect game," then let the crowd speak for 38 seconds. I can't imagine a broadcaster today shutting up for three seconds, much less 38.
The Dodgers host the Cardinals tonight to start the National League Division Series. The game will be broadcast nationally using the latest high-definition television technology. But I'd argue that the clearest picture of the game will come via radio and, as has been the case for the past six decades, it will come from Mr. Scully.

COMMITTEE TO COMMEMORATE OLD YANKEE STADIUM

COMMITTEE TO COMMEMORATE OLD YANKEE STADIUM

The Committee to Commemorate to Old Yankee Stadium has three urgent objectivess:

1) To Preserve Old Yankee Stadium Gate 2 as a permanent commemorative feature at "Old Yankee Stadium Park". This is our most time-critical goal.

2) To name the new park site of Old Yankee Stadium "OLD YANKEE STADIUM PARK", a majestically unique and infinitely more appealing, accurate, and appropriate name. The currently proposed name has been widely criticised by Baseball, historical and architectural experts (as well as legions of informed fans and concerned citizens) as grossly common, bland, ambiguous, and terribly disconnected from the site's preeminent role in New York history, including its internationally unmatched history in Baseball. (Indeed, there are many dozens of Heritage Parks and Fields across the country, including the Cleveland Indians "Heritage Park" - right in the AL East!!!)

3) To name the baseball field(s) in Old Yankee Stadium Park, "BABE RUTH MEMORIAL FIELD" in tribute to the most renowned player and icon in Baseball history, and to replace the original "BABE RUTH MEMORIAL FIELD" which was destroyed to make room for new Yankee Stadium. (BABE RUTH MEMORIAL FIELD was intended to be a "permanent" tribute to Babe Ruth's immortal and unparalleled contributions to the City of New York. It's destruction, along with the destruction of "The House That Ruth Built", leaves the City devoid of any public tribute to America's greatest and most beloved sports figure.

In the near future, we will also be applying to the U.S. Department of Interior for long-overdue National Landmark status for the site of Old Yankee Stadium, which will provide even further funds available to the City of New York for the preservation of Gate 2.

Game 3 and Girardi

There is a lot of blame to go around for game 3.

1.) Poor managing
2.) Lack of clutch hitting
3.) Lack of clutch pitching

Lets start with Girardi. He tried to outmanage Mike and got burned. Pettitte should have finished the inning. Joba was horrible! Why is Gaudin on the roster if Joe is not going to use him? Joe managed that game like it was game 7 of the WS and lost. Mo should have come out for one more inning as well.

Will Teixeria hit? His bat needs to come to life if the Yankees are going to do something in the ALCS and the WS, if they make it there. A-Rod has carried this team enough. Jeter has been amazing, but he cannot do it alone.

Melky, Cano, Damon, and Swisher have all been quiet. It is time for them to hit in the big spot.

Tonight will tell a lot about this team. They need to bounce back and EARN the win...They cannot expect the Angels to continue to make mistakes and hand them games.

GO Yankees!

"SAVE THE GATE" COMMEMORATIVE BRICK DRIVE MEDIA RELEASE!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Monday, October 19, 2009

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

OLD YANKEE STADIUM PARK

"SAVE THE GATE"
COMMEMORATIVE BRICK DRIVE

Proposed by Citizens and Groups
from Around the Country to Help
SAVE HISTORIC GATE 2
at the
"The House That Ruth Built"

For the purpose of saving historic Gate 2 at Old Yankee Stadium, baseball groups HistoryOfTheYankees.com, the Committee to Commemorate Old Yankee Stadium & the Committee to Commemorate Babe Ruth - speaking for and acting on behalf of Baseball fans, historians, architects, historic preservationists, and other concerned citizens, groups, and relevant experts from New York and around the nation, has voluntarily researched and developed a
public fundraising campaign to the City of New York, entitled the "SAVE THE GATE" Commemorative Brick Drive.

This Commemorative Brick Drive will be similar to ones throughout Major League Ballparks and other leading sports venues throughout the world, such as the highly successful programs employed by the Mets at Citi Field (Fanwalk), the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field, Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, and the Cleveland Indians' "Heritage Park."

Based on Committee studies and expert estimates, commemorative bricks at plazas & walkways encompassing the new parkland and ball fields scheduled to replace the historic site of Old Yankee Stadium could generate well over 5 Million dollars (as other MLB "legacy" brick memorials have) - depending on exact design. This would provide the City of New York millions of dollars more than is needed to save historic Gate 2!!

Legacy brick plazas & walkways would also dramatically increase YEAR-ROUND tourism and visitation to the much-in-need Old Yankee Stadium neighborhood - where residents and businesses have lost critical revenues with the Stadium's closure and destruction. Saving Gate 2 will make the new park one of the most respected and profitable in the country. These brick plazas & walkways would also simultaneously enhance the currently poor aesthetics of the preliminary "Heritage Field" plan, exponentially improving the historic and cultural "disconnect" decried by historic design experts. (Adding extra elegance and attraction, the commemorative bricks can be made in magnificent blue, white and gray combinations, in unique tribute to the Stadium's unparalleled place in history.)

The Parks Department's preliminary plan for the historic Old Yankee Stadium is the highly controversial and criticized "Heritage Field", which retains absolutely NOTHING from Old Yankee Stadium. This as yet unapproved plan has been emphatically objected to by officials, experts, and fans, who regard it as historically, architecturally, and aesthetically "bland" and "inauthentic". It's MOST tragic failure is that it omits saving anything from original Yankee Stadium - a fatal flaw easily corrected with the saving of the 1920's era Gate 2. (The Parks Department abruptly withdrew from their October 5 appearance before the NYC Design Commission, where they were scheduled to defend against these widespread and well-informed criticisms in a Public Hearing before New York City Design Commission, which oversees the aesthetic and architectural suitability of all public projects in New York City.)

Parks Department has told the media (without providing any evidence whatsoever ) that the cost of saving Gate 2 - the original Stadium's most glorious remaining element - is too prohibitive, claiming (again without providing any evidence) it would cost "10 Million dollars". Architectural and structural engineering experts assess the cost at only 1 Million dollars, less than the cost of demolishing and removing the Gate. In other words, experts believe it will cost less to save Gate 2 than to destroy it!!!

In any case, the "SAVE THE GATE" Commemorative Brick Drive would eliminate any cost concern - providing up to 10 Million dollars - thereby saving a majestic part of America's greatest and most historically important stadium, thereby assuring that the historic site of Old Yankee Stadium be more properly preserved, protected & commemorated - making it one of the premier urban parks in America - rather than the unnecessary mediocre and uninspired architectural, aesthetic, cultural, and historical flop that's now proposed by the Parks' Department.

For further information, please call or write the contacts below - who can also put you in touch with historians, preservationists, architects, and other relevant experts, helping to save the gate.

Yankees Advance to Face the Angels

Well, the time has almost come. The ALCS. The Yankees won over 100 regular season games and now the real test begins. The Yankees played well in their sweep of the Twins, but the Angels are a totally different ballpark. I was a little shocked to hear today about Girardi wanting to go with a 3-man rotation. My initial response was shock and being upset. But after thinking about it more, maybe it is not a bad move. They have plenty of time to rest and CC pitching on 3 days rest, should not be an issue. Joba needs to stay in the bullpen as Hughes was not lights out in the ALDS. The one things the Angels are going to do is run, run, and run some more. Jorge and Jose are going to be busy, and the Yankees' pitchers must not let the runners distract them. With Mo and Hughes in the pen, it is basically a 7-inning game for the Yankees. CC, AJ, and Andy must come up big and not give up the big inning. A run here and there is fine, but there cannot be 3 and 4 run innings or this team is done. The post-season is always great because it will be a non-star that will make the big play or get the big hit. A Melky, a Swisher, a Garnder, etc. That is usually where it is won....Lets get ready for Friday night. I will be at the game and cheering the Yankees on to have a chance to win it's 27 World Championship. GO YANKEES!

MINNEAPOLIS -- The celebration on the field was muted and reserved, the nine men in road grays honoring the old directive to act like they had been here before. Derek Jeter fielded the ball, fired to first, pumped his fist in postgame delight the same way he has been doing it since Opening Day in Cleveland in 1996.
Mariano Rivera was stoic as always, cracking a thin smile as the Metrodome quieted for the final time in its baseball life, this 4-1 Yankees victory over, this 3-0 ALDS sweep complete. He shook hands with Jorge Posada, then let it morph into a hug, a most familiar postgame ritual. Andy Pettitte?
PHOTOS: YANKS SWEEP TWINS
"I just couldn't stop smiling," Pettitte said. "It's always so . . ."
He smiled, looking for the right word, then found it.
"Sweet," he said. "So, so sweet."

They are the last portion of the dynasty still wearing pinstripes, a most regal final four, 16 rings spread among them and more memories than they will ever be able to keep track of when their rank is finally reduced to zero. So many have come and gone through the years, and all of them spoke about feeling good for the newbies in the clubhouse, the big-ticket guys and the fill-ins.
"You see how happy they are," Posada said, "and it makes you feel good for them."
But they felt good for themselves, too, because for all the muscle memory that used to rule the day around the Yankees, all the years when they seemed to win on auto-pilot, it had been five years since they had won a postseason series, an endless march through the desert.
VAC'S WHACKS
VACCARO ON TWITTER
The Red Sox had won two World Series in that time, the White Sox one, after a combined total of 172 years. The Mets had won a postseason series in the interim. The Tampa Bay Rays had won a pennant. Five years can vanish in an eye-blink if you aren't careful, and the world can turn upside-down.
"These guys have been through so much together," said manager Joe Girardi, who put in a lot of time playing alongside the final four and now has a postseason victory to his managerial credit because he is fortunate enough to manage them. "I feel really good about that, and really good for them."
Each of the final four had a say in what happened last night, too. For some it was routine: Rivera getting the last four outs in a save that you would call ho-hum only if you have missed the adventures of Joe Nathan and Jonathan Papelbon this weekend, Jeter serving as the heads-up middle man in play that defined the game, starting a 6-2-5 relay that nailed Nick Punto as the tying run at third and all but stuck a fork in the Metrodome's bubble roof.
For the other two?
Pettitte was remarkable, as good as he has ever been on a night when he would tie John Smoltz for the most wins in the history of the postseason with 15. He was perfect through four innings and merely superb for the balance of his 81-pitch night, allowing a run on three hits.
But it is Posada who barely will need the airplane this morning to fly back to LaGuardia. A year ago he was forced to sit idly by as his teammates missed the postseason for the first time since 1993, more question marks attached to his uniform than the Riddler's. Just three days ago he was benched in favor of Jose Molina, having to answer all the old questions about his defense.
And yet with the Yankees in sight of ending their October skein, Posada hit the go-ahead home run in the sevent h and made the key peg to nail Punto in the eighth. One more time, he embodied everything an admiring Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he envied about this team as a whole, and the final four as a group.
"I hate it when I play against them," Gardenhire said, "but I do enjoy watching the way they play. They are professionals. They are baseball players."
And they are October winners, again, for the first time since John Kerry's Swift Boaters shared the headlines, and you could see it all over their champagne-streaked faces: This was sweet. So, so sweet.

Response to the article written by George Mole', "Save a Piece of Yankee History"

Dear Editor,

I would like to respond to the article written by George Mole', "Save a Piece of Yankee History,” published in the Norwood News on October 8th.

Mr. Mole' is absolutely correct in everything he stated in his wonderfully written article. Nothing defines the Bronx or the borough's success more than Yankee Stadium. Not only has Yankee Stadium been the heart and soul of the Bronx since 1923, but it has shared those values with all of America, and even the world.

This icon has meant more to people than just the greatest venue in sports. Why else would Popes hold mass and the memorial to 9/11 victims be held there?

The House That Ruth Built has been a great source of pride to the Bronx. To save Gate 2 will ensure that the horrendous mistakes of losing Ebbets Field and the Polo Grounds will not be repeated. It will also give rise to great dreams of those playing at, visiting, and respecting Heritage Park, as well as be a solid tourist destination for tourists that visit from all around the world.

Speak up to your political leaders. You have a marvelous monument already standing. You don’t want to lose it. If you do, when people go to Heritage Park and ask why not one remnant of glorious Yankee Stadium is left standing, you will have yourselves and your leaders to blame. Yankee Stadium has given much joy and pride to the Bronx. The least we can all do is to save Gate 2. Yankee Stadium has earned it, and so has the Bronx!

As Stadium Rises, Neighbors Wait for Replacement Parks

As Stadium Rises, Neighbors Wait for Replacement Parks
February 2, 2009
Editor’s Note: The following article appeared in Bronx Youth Heard, a publication of the Bronx Youth Journalism Initiative. It was written by Jose De Jesus, 18, a student at Cardinal Hayes High School.

Macombs Dam Park and most of Mullaly Park, are gone. In their place, stands the nearly completed Yankee Stadium. And although baseball fans are excited about the upcoming season, many Bronx residents wonder when the city will complete the new parks it promised to build in place of the ones it and the Yankees destroyed.
The Harlem River waterfront is one place the city plans to create new parkland. However, construction for the project — originally slated for completion in 2008 — was delayed due to the discovery of a number of oil drums buried under the construction site.
Though a New York Times story on June 25 indicated that the park would be completed in April, the project is now scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009, according to Parks Department spokesperson Jesslyn Moser.
Helen Foster, the only Bronx member of the City Council to vote against the project, is critical of the Parks Department’s performance in finishing the replacement parks (there are eight total).
“Why can’t you build a park as fast as a stadium?” said a Foster spokesperson. Sentiments like this are echoed throughout the Highbridge community surrounding the stadium.
“I like the Yankees just as much as the next guy,” said Sebastian Bernard, a high school senior who lives four blocks away from the site of the new stadium. “But I didn’t want to lose the parks I grew up playing in just so they can get a new stadium.”
Despite the delays, the Harlem River Waterfront Park will bring many recreational opportunities to the community for the first time. ”The park will include 16 tennis courts (12 beneath a bubble during the colder months)… an outdoor classroom, a beach area, barbecue area, passive recreational space, scenic overlooks, and an esplanade to unite the site,” Moser wrote in an e-mail. “[Also] a concessionaire is being sought to operate/manage the bubbled tennis courts, [and there will be] an indoor/outdoor café, and an ice rink.”
Assuming there are no more delays, Bronx residents will have to wait at least another year to practice their backswings or grill burgers at the new park.
Meanwhile, construction for the new stadium is ahead of schedule, with the expected completion date being Feb. 4.
“How is it that they can build a stadium almost overnight, but they can’t finish the parks they promised us without huge delays?” says Blanca Morales, a 42-year-old mother of three who lives in the area. “When it’s something to bring in money from outside the Bronx, it gets completed in a heartbeat, but when it’s a park for the people who live and work in the Bronx, why are delays almost always expected?”

Bronx parks advocates, employees, and elected officials gathered last Saturday at Lehman College for the 15th Annual Bronx Parks Speak Up, which was highlighted by a heated discussion among City Council members about the Yankee Stadium replacement parks and the fate of parks maintenance in this year’s budget.
The event also offered workshops, presentations on green jobs and the relationship between health and environment in the Bronx. But the main event centered around a panel discussion on parks and politics featuring six of the borough’s nine council members, including James Vacca, Helen Diane Foster, Annabel Palma, Joel Rivera, Oliver Koppell, and Melissa Mark-Viverito. State Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz moderated.
There was some disagreement on the future of the perennially underfunded parks maintenance budget. Rivera painted by far the rosiest picture, saying he supports a “one percent for parks” initiative, which would allocate one percent of the city budget for parks beautification and maintenance.
Koppell dismissed that as wishful thinking. “[I’m] not going to stand here to please the crowd and say we’re going to increase parks maintenance budget,” he said, adding that if the city can avoid significant cuts in the parks budget, “we’ll be lucky.”
But Vacca said the problem is bigger than this year’s budget woes. “The budget crisis is the newest pretense the city is using” to underfund parks, he said. The real issue is that the city sinks billions of dollars into park renovation and creation, he said, but then “we don’t safeguard those investments” by funding parks maintenance and programming.
The hot-button political issues came at the end, with Dinowitz saying the city “all too often treats parkland as real estate.” He singled out the Croton Filtration Plant being built in Van Cortlandt Park and the new Yankee Stadium being built on a public baseball field. (Dinowitz was a prime opponent of the filtration plant, but he voted for the alienation of Macombs Dam Park, paving the way for the new stadium.) Replacement fields can’t be built until the old stadium is completely razed, which the city says won’t happen until at least 2010.
Karen Argenti, a longtime parks advocate, pushed further. “I want to know when Yankee Stadium is coming down, and if it’s not tomorrow, why?” she said. “Why are you not standing up to the mayor? Tell him, ‘It has to come down.’”
Foster defended the Bronx delegation. “You’re looking at a body that does stand up to the mayor,” she said. “I’m the elected official who lives the closest. I hear the crack of the bat.” She said her first committee meeting, in April, will focus on when the old stadium is coming down.
Bronx Parks Commissioner Hector Aponte said the Yankees will leave the old stadium April 1, and after preliminary work, the actual structure will begin to come down in late summer or early fall. He predicted it will take at least a year to tear down the old stadium, ending in mid-2010, and that the ball fields slated to be built on the site should be finished by the fall of 2011.
Aponte added that the whole process was delayed because the Yankees had unexpectedly exercised a provision of their agreement with the city, which allowed them to extend their lease on the old stadium for up to two years.
Joyce Hogi, a neighborhood resident, activist, and vice president of the Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, said those timelines were nonsense.
“It’ll take six months just to get the scaffolding up,” she said.

Harvey Frommer on Sports - '27 World Champions

Harvey Frommer on Sports
NY Yankees '27 World Champions

A lot of hype and hoopla surrounds the 2009 World Series especially as it swirls around the Yankees of New York - - an odds on favorite to win it all.
Win or lose it - - the Yankees of 2009 are no way the powerhouse the Yankees of 1927 were.
What happened before the World Series of 1927 would provide a source of controversy through the ages. The Waner brothers, Lloyd, "Big Poison" and Paul, "Little Poison," sent up their baseball cards to Babe Ruth who was at ease in a manner of speaking in his room in a hotel in Pittsburgh.
"Why, they're just kids," he said, "if I was that little, I'd be afraid of getting hurt."
That was the first year the Waners played together in the Pirate outfield. "That was a great thrill for us," Paul recalled. "We even brought Mother and Dad and our sister to the World Series.
"We won before it even got started," Babe Ruth wrote later. "The first two games were scheduled for Pittsburgh's Forbes Field. Naturally we showed up a day early and worked out in the strange park."
The Pirates," Ruth recalled," had their workout just before we went out onto the field. We came out from the clubhouse. Most of the Pirates had dressed and were sitting in the stands to watch us go through practice."
Earl Combs hit a shot into the centerfield stands. Mark Koenig hit a ball off the right field wall and one off the left field barrier. Then it was Babe Ruth's turn.
"The first ball I hit over the roof of the right field grandstand," the Bammer said. "I put another one into the lower tier. Then I got hold of one and laid it into the centerfield bleachers."
"We really put on a show," Ruth said. "Lou and I banged ball after ball into the right field stands. Bob Meusel and Tony Lazzeri kept hammering balls into the left field seats."
All of the games of the 1927 World Series were scheduled for 1:30 P.M starts except for 2 P.M for a Sunday game. Prices for seats for all games were six dollars, five dollars, three dollars and one dollar. Four umpires were assigned.
GAME ONE
Outside of Forbes Field scalpers asked $25 a ticket, a price that was considered extreme gouging, which it was. The price for a World Series program featuring Miller Huggins and Pittsburgh manager Owen J. Bush on its cover, sold for 25 cents.
The pitching match up was Yankee right-handed ace Waite Hoyt against the big horse of the all right-handed Pirate staff, Ray Kremer, National League ERA leader who had won 19 of 27 decisions. The sloppy, herky-jerky game played in two hours and four minutes finally ended Yankees 5, Pirates 4.
Grantland Rice in the New York Herald-Tribune wrote: "It was scramble and rush and hullabaloo and stampede to look upon a gaudy spectacle which turned out to be one of the dullest games of the year. If Pittsburgh couldn't beat the Yankees today, it may be a tough job later on."
Babe Ruth shouted: "Well, it won't be long now boys. It won't be long now."
GAME II
Miller Huggins, a gambler, a hunch player, a manager with six starting pitchers available to him - tabbed George Pipgras, the big guy from Minnesota, as a surprise starter for the second game of the series Thursday, October 6th,
Still using the old, greasy glove, the one that had stood him in good stead in minor league stops at Atlanta, St. Paul, Charleston, and more, Pipgras took the mound against the Pirates.
Vic Aldridge, in his eighth major league season, a 15-game winner, took the mound for Pittsburgh.
Festive Forbes Field became boo city in the late innings. Jeers and catcalls rained down from unhappy Buc rooters. Others simply expressed their displeasure with the home team's ineffectiveness by exiting the ball park. The Bucs lost, 6-2.
"I was fast that day," Pipgras recalled. "I didn't throw but three curves. They kept coming up there looking for the curve but never got it."
It was called "The World's Dullest World Series after just two games!" in a New York Herald-Tribune headline.
GAME III
On Friday October 7, lines for bleacher seats were up and running at 5 A.M. - five hours before the gates of Yankee Stadium were scheduled to open.
There were 60,695 on hand, "the biggest money crowd in the history of the title series," in James R Harrison's phrase in The New York Times. There was also the biggest gate ever to that point in time for a World Series game - $209,665. Southpaw Herb Pennock, called "the aristocrat of baseball" by writer Will Wedge, was unbeaten in four World Series decisions.
The Yankees scored in the first inning off Buc right-hander, bespectacled Lee Meadows. Gehrig poked the ball to the running track in left center field scoring Combs and Koenig both of whom had singled.
The Squire Pennock set down Pittsburgh batter after batter. The Bucs were hitless through the seventh inning, an inning when the Yankees put the game away by scoring six times. The highlight of the Yankee big inning came when Mike Cvengros, a surname according to Grantland Rice "that you said with a sneeze," relieved Meadows.
A three run shot, Ruth's first home run of the world series, pushed the Yankee lead to 8-0. It triggered wild cheers for the Colossus of Clout as he made his way around the bases behind Combs and Koenig.
The screams of one fan captured the moment: "Take off those Pirates uniforms," he bellowed, "we know you're the St. Louis Browns." The Yankees surely manhandled the Bucs like they treated the Browns. Maybe Worse.
The 8-1 romp placed the Yankees one win away from becoming the first American League team to sweep a World Series.
Game IV
Saturday October 8th was damp, cloudy like the spirits of the Pirates. Rain in the morning would hold the announced Yankee Stadium attendance down to 57,909.
In the fifth inning, Ruth's second home run of the Series scored Earle Combs. The Yanks led 3-1. The Ruthian blast, according to James Harrison in The Times: "climbed uphill, while 60,000 shrieked in ecstasy and turned their eyes on the right field bleachers.
Desperate, the Pirates, fought back. They tied the score in the seventh. However, that was as far as they got. The Yankees, as everyone seemed to know they would, won the game.
Outside the Stadium about 3,000 Babe Ruth admirers waited patiently. Many policemen kept them company, at the ready to ease the Yankee icon to his car, parked on 157th Street.
The 1927 World Series, quickest ever played, lasted only 74 hours and 15 minutes and was just the second four game sweep in World Series history, the Braves over Athletics in 1914 was the first.
The Pittsburgh offense was held to a .223 average. Yankee pitchers combined for an incredible earned run average of only 2.00. Outscoring the Pirates 23-10, the men of Murderer's Row trailed a total of only two innings during the entire series. The Yankees used only 15 different players, just four pitchers.
The New York Times declared on October 12th that it had no argument with those "who assert that these Yankees are the greatest team in more than 50 years of baseball history. George Herman Ruth once again demonstrated that he is the superman of the game. . . (Dodger manager) Uncle Wilbert Robinson put it, 'That guy ought to be allowed to play only every other day.'"
The Yankees were the toast of the town, the champions, not only the best team in baseball in 1927, but they had strong bragging rights now to the mantle of the best baseball team of all time.
It was, as Waite Hoyt said, great to be young and to be a Yankee.

Yankees Go Up 2-0 in the ALDS

Thanks to A-Rod and Mark Tiexiera, the Yankees took a commanding 2-0 lead in the ALDS.
