The Park That Ruth Built by Paul Goldberger
The Park That Ruth Built
by Paul Goldberger August 10, 2009
When Shea Stadium was torn down and its site turned into a parking lot for the Mets’ new Citi Field earlier this year, nobody seemed to care, least of all historic preservationists. It didn’t have that much history, and it was ugly besides. Shea was no Yankee Stadium. But, now that the Yankees have moved to their new $1.5-billion ballpark, the question has arisen as to whether their former home ought to disappear as completely as Shea did. The city has promised to turn the site into a park, complete with three ball fields. But the current design calls for the entire stadium to be demolished, its history recalled mainly through a series of panels and plaques in the pavement.
Adrian Benepe, the parks commissioner, is a supporter of the park plan, but he knows that a lot of fans have never got over the fact that not a trace remains of either Ebbets Field or the Polo Grounds, both of which were replaced by housing projects.
“Yankee Stadium has had papal Masses, Billy Graham’s crusade, championship boxing matches, and the rally when Nelson Mandela was freed,” Benepe said. “Why can’t we create a great new park that acknowledges all of this?”
Benepe and city officials decided to hold a meeting. Rather than gather at City Hall, they asked if the Yankees would be willing to host a group in the new Stadium. So, the other day, Benepe and a dozen architects, preservationists, and community leaders spent two hours in Suite 7, a double-sized luxury box overlooking first base. The guest list included Lloyd Ultan, the Bronx borough historian; Sherida Paulsen, the former chairman of the Landmarks Preservation Commission; Rick Bell, from the American Institute of Architects; Tony Morante, the Yankees’ historian; and Jose Rodriguez, the district manager of Community Board 4 in the Bronx. Two of the designers for the new park, Gary Sorge and David Vanden-Eynden, also came to talk about their project, which has been given the bland name of Heritage Field.
Suite 7 was set up with a U-shaped table to make it feel more like a boardroom, and the Yankee hosts provided a buffet of Cracker Jacks, Power Bars, nuts, and pretzels. “This is just a brainstorming session,” Benepe said.
Sorge started out with a PowerPoint presentation of the design, which he said would have “subtle reminders of the site’s past” and would still be “a quality community recreational park.” He explained that one of the three ball fields would be set in roughly the position of the old Yankee Stadium diamond, but shifted slightly, so that second base would be atop the original home plate. The plans also called for the reuse of two thirty-foot-long panels of the old Stadium’s famous scalloped frieze. And the designers proposed painting two of the park’s field light posts to resemble foul poles.
Ultan, the historian, was the first to respond. “What is missing from the design is the architecture of the Stadium itself,” he said, holding up a souvenir cookie tin shaped like the old Stadium. “Some people came to see me recently who were trying to save Gate 2, which has not been altered. Couldn’t we preserve that as a monument?”
“Our research showed that Gate 2 had been altered,” one of the planners said. “It would have to be restored.”
“What I’m missing here are the small-scale parts of the Stadium that could be kept,” said Bell, who, like Ultan, had brought along his own miniature model of the Stadium. “I find a sense of continuity and authenticity lacking in this park design.”
No one wanted to raise the awkward question of how authentic the Stadium is in the first place, since it was so drastically renovated in the nineteen-seventies that not much of the original 1923 structure actually remains. The conversation shifted to the field itself. “Putting second base at home plate doesn’t make sense,” Paulsen said. “Why can’t home plate just be at home plate?”
Sorge explained that the main ball field had to be shifted to allow room for the other two fields. The participants seemed to understand the geometric imperative, but they weren’t happy about it.
“Some of the most evocative public spaces in the nation are places where great battles took place,” Benepe said. “In Central Park, we now have forty or so places where you can dial a phone number and a celebrity tells you a story about that place. You could have Yankees doing that here.”
“At least it isn’t being replaced by a building,” said Wilhelm Ronda, the director of planning for the Bronx borough president’s office.
“I’m just happy it isn’t going to be like Shea Stadium,” another particpant said, “paved over, so where the ballpark was is now where you park your Honda.” ♦
Last pitch to save Gate 2: Yankees fans battle to preserve famed portal to old stadium
BY Benjamin Peim SPECIAL TO THE NEWS
Monday, September 28th 2009, 4:00 AM
It's the bottom of the ninth and Yankees fans fighting to save Gate 2 of the old stadium are swinging for the fences.
The city Parks Department plans to seek preliminary approval next week for plans to commemorate the stadium at Heritage Field - the future park after the House That Ruth Built meets the wrecking ball. Gate 2 is not in the plans.
"If it gets approved, I think we're through," said John Trush, one of the fans fighting to save the gate.
The Parks Department presented its plans last May to the Design Commission, which approves all permanent works of art, architecture and landscape architecture proposed on or over city property. It granted preliminary approval, with the caveat they make revisions to better incorporate the stadium's history.
At next week's meeting, with Gate 2 crusaders making their pitch, the commission will decide the department's revised plans for the old Yankee Stadium.
A Parks spokesman said the revised design will have some of the old stadium's frieze, historical plaques and markers, and one of the baseball diamonds will follow the same alignment as the old infield.
Fans have organized over the Internet to try to save the gate, envisioned as a historical landmark and an entrance to Heritage Field for community sports use. They have met with various city officials, including from the Bronx borough president's office.
"Our chances were a million to one when we started this," said Trush, "and now it's 50-50."
City officials argue the gate would have to be stabilized and restored, which could cost $10million. They also question the gate's historical value, claiming it was significantly altered in the stadium's renovation in the 1970s.
But others disagree.
"The argument falls down when you take a look at the plans for the site," argued Bronx borough historian Lloyd Ultan. "Most of what they're saving is from the 1970s structure."
He said about 85% of the gate's structure is from the 1920s.
And the plan's backers said volunteer architects say saving the gate would cost as little as $1million.
Ultan argued that saving the gate "would serve the same function for future generations as the Roman forums serve in Rome today."Read more: http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/bronx/2009/09/28/2009-09-28_last_pitch_to_save_gate_2.html#ixzz0SQcaUvMi

THE YANKEES ARE AL EAST CHAMPIONS!
With a sweep of the division-rival Red Sox over the weekend, the Yankees reached 100 victories and clinched not only the division title but home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.
If Boston takes the AL Wild Card, the Yankees will face the winner of the tight AL Central race, either Detroit or Minnesota, in the American League Division Series when the playoffs begin.
GO YANKEES!
Yankees Take Their Magic Number Down to 1 !
CC pitched his game to make a case for the Cy Young. With a shutout of the Red Sox and his 19th win on the season, he may have just made his case. CC was amazing in the shutout win over the Red Sox. The Yankee bats were alive all day, but they could not get guys home. Dice-K got out of jam after jam, but the Cano homer finally broke the game open. The 3-0 win took the magic number for the Yankees down to 1. If the weather holds up today, the Yankees can clinch the AL East with the win....GO YANKEES!

Collision Course: Red Sox versus Yankees - Harvey Frommer on Sports
Collision Course: Red Sox versus Yankees
It has been said that those who forget the past will somehow always be re-living it, or words to that effect. Here were are in 2009 - and it's 1978 all over again on the playing field of baseball's greatest rivalry - -without some of the old time sizzle.
In 1976, the New York Yankees finished the season with a 97-62 record and won the American League East title. The Red Sox of Boston finished in third place, 15 1/2games behind. In 1977, the Yankees won 100 of the 162 games they played and repeated as division title winners. Boston won 97 games and tied for second place with Baltimore. Both teams trailed the Yankees by 2 l/2 games.
It was during these two seasons that more and more Yankee fans began to sport "Red Sox Suck" tee shirts. And it was during this time that Yankee principal owner George Steinbrenner kept wheeling and dealing, embellishing the Yankee image, his team's skills and the Red Sox failings.
The start of the 1978 season gave Boston fans hope. Over the winter the team engineered several key moves to strengthen itself. Mike Torrez, winner of two World Series games for the Yankees in 1977, was signed as a free agent. Dennis Eckersley, just 23, was acquired from the Cleveland Indians. It was felt that the combination of the veteran Torrez and the youthful Eckersley would shore up Sox pitching. Another key Boston acquisition was Jerry Remy, a sure-handed speedy second baseman obtained from the California Angels. Remy's promise was added speed on the base path and an effective contact hitter near the top of the Boston batting order.
With Remy at second base and Rick Burleson at shortstop, Boston fans felt their team had a double-play combination to rival if not surpass the Yankee tandem of Bucky Dent and Willie Randolph. George Scott, the Sox first baseman, had recorded 33 homers in 1977 -- almost twice the total of Yankee first baseman Chris Chambliss. Slugging Butch Hobson was a fixture at third base. Nettles of New York was peerless with a glove, but Sox fans argued that Hobson outmatched the Yankee third baseman when it came to hitting. Hobson had rapped 30 homers and driven in 112 run in 1977.
Both teams boasted top-flight catchers. Most baseball experts rated Boston's Carlton Fisk and New York's Thurman Munson among the two best backstops in all of baseball.
Both teams had powerful clutch-hitting outfielders, capable of making crucial defensive plays. Carl Yastrzemski, Dwight Evans, and Fred Lynn would be Boston's picket line, augmented by perhaps the best potential designated hitter in all of baseball -Jim Rice. The Yankees had steady Roy White, flamboyant Mickey Rivers, and dramatic Reggie Jackson, buttressed by Paul Blair, Lou Piniella, and, if needed, Cliff Johnson.
If there was a difference, it was in pitching. Over the winter George Steinbrenner had signed Rich Gossage, Rawly Eastwick, and Andy Messersmith. This trio joined Catfish Hunter, Don Gullett, Sparky Lyle, and Ed Figueroa, Ken Holtzman, Dick Tidrow, and Ron Guidry (16-7 in 1977 and getting better, much better).
Against this array of all types of pitching talent, Boston had its Latin duo of Luis Tiant and Mike Torrez, Eckersley, Bill Lee, and Bob Stanley. Bill Campbell had saved 31 games in 1977, and it was felt that he could repeat that performance in 1978.
Seven straight wins at Fenway Park launched Boston on a fine start as the season got underway. By May 18th, the Yankees (19-13) trailed the second-place Sox (23-12) who were a half-game behind the surprising first-place Detroit Tigers. On May 24th, the Sox moved into sole possession of first place. They would remain there for 113 days, to the delight of their adoring and rabid fans.
At the All-Star break, powered by a combination of good pitching and power hitting, Boston had a record of 57 wins against just 26 losses $F6 a .687 winning percentage, the best in baseball. More enjoyable to some Red Sox fans was the record of the New York Yankees. The hated rivals were mired in third place, way back off the pace.
"George came into the clubhouse one day," Reggie Jackson recalled, "and said 'I'm going to back up the truck and get rid of all you guys, everybody, if we don't get it turned around.' It was an unbelievable tirade. Whether that motivated us or not, I don't know. I think it made us mad. George yelled at us. Told us we were terrible, that he was going to break up the club and nobody was above being traded."
Emanating daily from New York was news of controversy, sore-armed pitchers, bruised infielders, battered egos, unhappy coaches. In Boston, for a change, there was relative harmony.
On July 18th, the Sox stretched their lead over the Yanks to 14 games. "Even Affirmed couldn't catch the Red Sox now," snapped Reggie Jackson, referring to the horse that had won the 1978 Triple Crown.
Affirmed is long gone and so are the motor mouthings of Reggie Jackson. And this last weekend of September 2009 on a collision vourse the Yankees of New York and the Red Sox of Boston meet at Yankee Stadium - -
a lot is on the line.

Update on Yankee Stadium Gate 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
By Mike Silva ~ September 16th, 2009. Filed under: Announcements.
Last month I had Mark Costello join me live from the studios of 1240 AM WGBB to talk about his groups attempt to preserve Gate 2 of the old Yankee Stadium. Earlier today Mark sent me an update, along with the following press release (see below). I thought the readers of the site would be interested in the progress. Also, Mark’s group has a meeting with the Bronx Borough President this coming Monday (9/21) about the situation. If you are interested in getting involved or want to contact the group go to saveyankeestadiumgate2.com
Save Yankee Stadium Gate 2 Press Release
Recently, there have been multiple newspaper articles published regarding the proposal to preserve the original Yankee Gate 2 as part of the design for the new Heritage Field, to be built on the site of the original Yankee Stadium (The House that Ruth Built). Unfortunately, some of the information in the articles from quoted sources is inaccurate. This update specifically addresses those inaccuracies, as well as adding some additional clarification.
Cost: $1 Million or Less
Unnamed sources have been quoted that preserving, restoring, and stabilizing the Gate will cost $10 Million.
However, assessments we have received from several architects and structural engineering firms have determined preserving Gate 2 to be a simple/straightforward project. They have estimated that the expense of its restoration would be approximately $1 million, a small fraction (less than 2%) of the overall cost to build Heritage Field.
Discussions with several contractors indicate their willingness to volunteer services for this effort. Similar to the current Polo Grounds Staircase Project, fundraising through pledges can produce additional financial options. The sale of commemorative paving bricks also has the potential to defray much of this cost. The Gate as a freestanding structure would require minimal on-going maintenance. Made of super-hard Edison Portland cement, Gate 2 is almost indestructible.
Originality: 80 Percent
Parks Planners have been quoted stating Gate 2 has been substantially changed since its construction and therefore is not worthy of preservation. In fact, there is a general misconception that not much of the original Stadium survived the 1970’s renovation.
On the contrary, a substantial amount of the original stadium from the original 1920’s era ballpark remains, and of that, Gate 2 is the most architecturally significant element.
Today Gate 2 is 80% original, even after the 1973-76 renovations. Historical photographs, blueprints, historians, and baseball experts confirm this originality. The small modifications made to the upper portion of the Gate are compatible with the original 1920’s design and if retained in the preserved Gate, would allow it to include elements of the 1923 construction, the 1928 expansion and the 1976 modernization.
Current Plan: Nothing to be Retained from Original Stadium
The current design for Heritage Field does not retain anything from before the 1973-76 renovations. Nothing of the original Stadium would remain. This deficiency has been noted by the New York City Design Commission, who has requested that the NYC Parks Department revise the current park plan to better “capture the historical significance of the original Yankee Stadium.”
Preserving Gate 2 is the best way to provide the needed historical, architectural, and cultural link back to the 1920’s. Preserving Gate 2 would create a dignified monument to the rich history of The Bronx, the Yankees, and all events held within these majestic confines. Such a celebrated piece of history would serve as an “Arch of Triumph” for the Borough of The Bronx and would be a tourist attraction all year long. It could be another focal point of the community and significantly enhance local business revenues.
A NY Daily News Poll taken in mid-August asked, “It’s important to have that piece of the old Stadium in place?” The results were 78% in favor despite the fact that the high $10 Million cost estimate was used as a basis in the poll question. In addition, we have received 99% favorable and supportive comments on our website, with more than 15,000 website hits. This is clear indication that the general public is in favor of preserving Gate 2.
The complete details of our proposal, including renderings and animations, are located on our website at www.savetheyankeegate2.com.
We welcome the opportunity to provide additional information, to meet in-person and to discuss our proposal with all interested individuals.

Jeter elated to share feat with parents - MLB.com
Jeter elated to share feat with parents
Their support, guidance shaped Yankees star's character
By Bryan Hoch / MLB.com
NEW YORK -- In the hours after Derek Jeter tied Lou Gehrig on the Yankees' all-time hit list Wednesday, Jeter spoke of two people who had been camped out in New York all week, watching his every at-bat since Monday.
"They've always been supportive of me in everything I've done," Jeter said of his father, Dr. Charles Jeter, and his mother Dorothy. "It means a lot for me to be able to share the experience with them, so I'm happy that I'm able to do it here at home."
Fans will be able to follow the journey as well. MLB.com will carry all of Jeter's at-bats live until he passes Gehrig.
Jeter's parents will remain in New York as long it takes for him to become the Yankees' all-time hit king. Just as various managers and hitting coaches have helped mold Jeter the hitter throughout the past two decades, Charles and Dorothy have molded Jeter the person.
And Jeter's steady leadership and classy persona have never been ignored within the Yankees family.
His manicured public image and the polished commentary that helps to craft it are just as recognizable as the way he digs into the batter's box, his right hand extended and requesting time from the umpire, or the classic jump-throw to first base from deep onto the outfield grass.
Since arriving on the big league scene as a full-time player in 1996, Jeter has commanded a certain respect throughout the game, earning laudatory praise from within the Yankees organization and around the Major Leagues. In an era where superstar athletes have struggled to adjust to the exponential growth of media coverage, Jeter has remained above the fray.
"I don't think it's a situation where I'm mindful of it because of what I'm doing," Jeter said. "How I am is how I am. It's not like I'm trying to be a certain way just because I'm playing baseball.
"I pretty much think I've been the same person since Day 1, so I don't look at it as though I've changed. I think you learn more throughout the years, but I try to think that I'd be the same way regardless of what I'm doing."
Jeter's strong makeup has often been credited to his family values. Jeter's parents worked to ensure that their children would grow up with the character to allow them to be successful, no matter what career paths they followed.
Long before Jeter made his first dollar as a professional athlete, he was under contract -- to his parents, who had him sign a deal at the dawn of every school year in their Kalamazoo, Mich., home, outlining his academic goals and curfews. For the most part, Jeter attacked those tasks with the same discipline he does Major League pitching today.
All-time Yankees hit leaders
Derek Jeter is on the verge of surpassing Lou Gehrig and setting the record for most hits by a Yankee. Here are the top 10 Yankees leaders in hits.
No. Player Games Hits
T1. Lou Gehrig 2,164 2,721
T1. Derek Jeter 2,119 2,721
3. Babe Ruth 2,084 2,518
4. Mickey Mantle 2,401 2,415
5. Bernie Williams 2,076 2,336
6. Joe DiMaggio 1,736 2,214
7. Don Mattingly 1,785 2,153
8. Yogi Berra 2,116 2,148
9. Bill Dickey 1,789 1,969
10. Earle Combs 1,456 1,866
He did pretty well attacking the pitching in high school, as well, batting .508 (30-for-59) as a senior and .557 as a junior. He was elected into the Kalamazoo Central High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007.
"From interviewing some of the people who knew Jeter since he was in high school, I think Jeter was preparing himself to be who he has become back then," said Jack Curry, a New York Times baseball reporter who collaborated with Jeter on his 2001 autobiography, "The Life You Imagine."
"Even if Jeter was 'Derek Jeter, accountant,' today instead of 'Derek Jeter, Yankee shortstop,' I think he would still have the same kind of personality. Jeter has repeatedly said that he didn't want to make mistakes in his life because he didn't want to disappoint his parents. While some people say that just to say it, I think Jeter said it and actually lives it."
It just so happened that Jeter realized his childhood dream of playing shortstop for the Yankees, not that it happened overnight. There were tearful telephone calls home in the summer of 1993, when Jeter committed 56 errors in a Minor League season and wondered if he could make it. The discussions these days are more confident, but the phone still rings without fail.
"Every day we talk," Jeter said. "I think everyone needs people in their lives that are going to be honest with them. My parents aren't going to tell me necessarily what I want to hear, you know what I mean? They're going to give me their honest opinion. They're the first ones that I go to about anything if I need advice or help in any situation."
The job description -- star shortstop for the New York Yankees -- comes with unlimited distractions and temptations. Jeter has certainly had his taste, keeping city paparazzi busy for years with an unintentionally high-profile dating life. Jeter never asked for that spotlight, but he understands that it's part of the package, and so he has adapted.
"A big part of Derek is his honesty of his feelings," said Dodgers manager Joe Torre, Jeter's manager from 1996 through 2007. "He'll never look for an alibi if he didn't have success. He speaks honestly. He doesn't have prepared remarks. He doesn't concern himself with how it comes out. He speaks from the heart.
"Pretty much what he says is right on. Nowadays we spend so much time with TV highlights and a lot of our communication smacks of hokeyness. That's not Derek."

Jorge Posada, arguably Jeter's closest friend on the Yankees, agrees on the topic of why Jeter has been able to maintain his positive public image for so long in the media capital of the world.
"Great parents and he's well-thought," Posada said. "He thinks about everything before he does it. I don't think he wants to embarrass the organization or embarrass himself and his parents. He thinks about everything."
And he has been able to laugh at himself. When George Steinbrenner came down on Jeter for enjoying New York too much one night during the 2002 season, they filmed a memorable credit card commercial together in May 2003 that ended with the shortstop and the principal owner dancing in the same conga line.
Soon after, Steinbrenner made a snap decision during an Interleague series in Cincinnati and awarded Jeter the Yankees' captainship, a leadership role he continues to take great pride in.
"I think if you're in the position you're in, you should take it seriously," Jeter said. "I think you also have to be who you are. I don't think you can try to fool people. In time, the truth will come out, so I never try to act a certain way. I just act how I am as a person. You try to be positive, but I don't think you can fool people for an extended period of time."
Joe Girardi, the Yankees' current manager and a former teammate of Jeter's, said that he remembers quickly seeing something special in the young infielder.
"Very early on, you could see that his character was of very high standard," Girardi said. "When you have that type of character and that type of ability, you usually become a leader.
"You've got to compliment his parents and the job they did raising him. The bottom line was that he had to make the good decisions. You could see right away, time after time, he made good decisions in his life. You've got to compliment Mom and Dad."
Jeter has not been shy about imparting his advice and lessons learned to others. During the World Baseball Classic in March, Jeter struck up a friendship with the Mets' David Wright, the fresh iconic face of a New York franchise -- just as Jeter once was.
Jeter said that Wright may have learned the same valuable survival tool as he once did across town in the Bronx -- to learn to say no when necessary and create time for yourself.
"There's a lot of people that may want you to do this or do that, but there's only one you," Jeter said. "You can only do so much. The one thing you have to remember is, the No. 1 priority is to play baseball. That's your job.
"You're going to be pulled in a lot of different directions, and people are going to want this from you and want that from you. You have to realize what your priority is."
Though gossip columnists delight in detailing his reported current relationship with actress Minka Kelly, as Jeter reaches the halfway marker of his second decade as a New York public figure, there have been no major scandals, no one example of a crisis that demanded the attention of a Hollywood agency to smooth over. That has not happened by accident.
"I'm not that different than anybody else," Jeter said. "I think one of the things that's important is to surround yourself with good people, you know what I mean? A lot of times, I think you look at people that get in trouble and make some wrong decisions and a lot of times, it's the people that surround them and get them into trouble.
"I just think you have to be conscious of who's around, and that's the biggest thing. But that goes for anyone."

Lou Gehrig - From the Vault
(From the Vault)
Lou Gehrig
"I consider myself the luckiest man on the face of the earth."
With Derek Jeter a lock to pass Lou Gehrig's all-time Yankee hit mark of 2,721 for his career, a record that stood for more than 70 years - - and reams and reams of copy having been devoted to the chase - - what the great first baseman was like and what he did in his career is worth recalling.
They called him "Larrupin Lou," "Iron Horse," "Biscuit Pants," "Columbia Lou," "Buster." Whatever they called him he was "The Pride of the Yankees."
Born Heinrich Ludwig Gehrig II on June 19, 1903 in New York City to poor German immigrants, he was the only one of four children to survive infancy.
Labeled "the Babe Ruth of the schoolyards" after hitting a tremendous grand slam ninth inning home run over the right field fence for his Commerce High School team in a special "national championship" game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, Gehrig went on to star at Columbia University.
"I did not go there to look at Gehrig," Yankee scout Paul Krichell said." I did not even know what position he played, but he played in the outfield against Rutgers and socked a couple of balls a mile. I sat up and took notice. I saw a tremendous youth, with powerful arms and terrific legs. I said, here is a kid who can't miss." Despite his mother's protestations, Gehrig signed with the Yankees for a $1,500 bonus. After brief minor league stints in 1923 and 1924; Gehrig came to stay with the Yankees in 1925 batting .295 in 126 games, his first full season. When Lou Gehrig stepped into the batter's box as a pinch hitter on June 1, 1925 for shortstop Pee Wee Wanninger, it began a string of 15 seasons of Yankee box scores with the name Gehrig always in the line-up.
In 1927, his second full season with the Yankees, he was voted the Most Valuable Player in the American League. His .363 average in 1934 gave him the batting championship. There were 13 straight seasons of 100 RBIs, seven seasons of more than 150 RBIs. His power came from his big shoulders, broad back and powerful thighs.
A two time MVP, a three time home run king, a five time RBI champ, Gehrig led the American League in batting average just once - with a .363 average in 1934 when he became the first Yankee to win the Triple Crown. Three times, however, he batted higher than .363 contributing to his .340 career batting average.
Among his records are: 184 RBI in 1931, an American League record, 23 career grand slams, a Major League record. On June 3, 1932, he became the first modern day player to hit four home runs in a game. In his 13 full seasons, Gehrig averaged 147 runs batted in. He hammered 493 career home runs - 73 were three-run homers, 166 were two-run homers. Gehrig homered once every 16.2 at bats. His home run to hit ratio was one to 5.51.
There are estimates that he earned $361,500 in salary from the Yankees. Playing in seven World Series pushed the total income above $400,000. Gehrig received $3,750 in his first season, $6,500 in his second year. This advanced $1,000 in 1927. For the next five years he received $25,000 and then he dropped to $23,000 for 1933 and 1934, after which he received $31,000 in 1935 and 1936, $36,750 in 1937, $39,000 in 1938 and $35,000 for 1939, a season when he played only eight games. Late in his career, Gehrig's hands were x-rayed and doctors spotted 17 fractures that had "healed" while he continued to play. He was worth every penny as he was a major part of seven pennant winners and six world champions.
On May 2, 1939, Wally Pipp whose place Gehrig had taken those long years ago, traveled from his home in Michigan to watch a Tigers-Yankees game. What he saw was that Gehrig, the highest paid player in all of baseball, had taken himself out of the lineup and was at home plate, a presenter of the lineup card to the umpires.
The great Gehrig would languish a while like a bowed oak, still the captain, still the Pride of the Yankees, still the bringer of the lineup card out to umpires before each game.
On June 19, 1939, in another bitter irony, the day of his 36th birthday, Lou Gehrig left the Mayo Clinic with a sealed envelope. "Mr. Gehrig is suffering from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. This type of illness involves the motor pathways and cells of the central nervous system and in lay terms is known as a form of infantile paralysis. The nature of this trouble makes it such that Mr. Gehrig will be unable to continue his active participation as a baseball player."
In December 1939, the Baseball Hall of Fame waived the mandatory five year waiting period for Lou Gehrig. On June 2, 1941, exactly 16 years to the day that he replaced Wally Pipp at first base, Gehrig passed away. On the Fourth of July 1941, a monument was erected in centerfield at Yankee Stadium:
HENRY LOUIS GEHRIG
June 19, 1903 June 2, 1941. A MAN, A GENTLEMAN, AND A GREAT BALLPLAYER WHISE AMAZING RECORD OF 2,130 CONSECUTIVE GAMES SHOULD STAND FOR ALL TIME. THIS MEMORIAL IS A TRIBUTE FROM THE YANKEE PLAYERS TO THEIR BELOVED CAPTAIN AND TEAMMATE.

SAVE THE GATE UPDATE! F.A.Q.'s
www.savetheyankeegate2.com
FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)
-What is the Save Gate 2 effort about?
The original 2005 plan to preserve a significant part of the original Yankee Stadium was changed recently to increase the replacement parklands. Most Bronx community residents, NYC residents and NY Yankee fans are NOT aware that the current plan is for “The House that Ruth Built” to be totally demolished. Our objective is to work with the Bronx Community, the NYC Department of Parks & Recreation and the NY Yankees in saving a small, historic, and architecturally beautiful portion of the old Yankee Stadium exterior wall at Gate 2. Located near the intersection of River Avenue and 161st Street, it will serve as a dramatic gateway into the new Heritage Field.
-Why are you trying to Save Gate 2?
We wish to recognize and remember, through the preservation of Gate 2, the historical, cultural and architectural importance of the old Yankee Stadium. This Gate stands proudly for all the fans, players and individuals who visited played and worked within her majestic confines. With the move across the street to the New Yankee Stadium, this tangible “bridge” from the old and new will enhance that great continuum of Yankee history for the enjoyment of generations to come.
-What is the historical significance of Gate 2?
Gate 2 is the most architecturally significant element remaining from the original 1920’s era ballpark. Gate 4 (behind homeplate) and Gate 6 (behind rightfield) were significantly modified as part of the 1973-76 renovations. In fact, the Gate 2 image was chosen to represent The Stadium in the Official Yankee Stadium Last Season 1923-2008 logo. Today, Gate 2 is 80% original and the small modifications made to the top portion are compatible with the 1920’s design.
-Isn’t it already too late to save Gate 2?
NO! While this is urgent, it still can be isolated and protected from demolition. As of late August 2009, final design plans for Heritage Field are only 50% complete and heavy demolition will begin with the removal of the Loge and then the Upper Tier. The exterior walls will then be pulled inward using bulldozers.
-Will preserving Gate 2 take away from the replacement parklands?
No, Gate 2 would not take up significant space. According to the Parks Department plan for Heritage Field, there is to be a sloped walk area in the current location of Gate 2. If preserved, this would provide an area with steps (also already in place on the Stadium site) and a majestic entry point to the park itself. Heritage Field is to be a 10 acre (435,600 square feet) park site. Gate 2 would be approximately 1,000 square feet and at a sloped entrance point currently planned. When all of this is taken into account, the monument would take up a minuscule amount of space.
-What is the environmental impact of the Gate 2 monument?
The gate is in a position where any shade would fall to the North, over 161st St. and not over the planned Heritage Field or over any planned trees. Also, with the current louvers and closed up windows re-opened, breezes would be able to flow through the monument.
-Will this effort further delay the completion of Heritage Field?
No, preserving Gate 2 will not change the NYC Parks Plan timeline for completion by Fall-Late 2011.
-What are the benefits for all of the stakeholders (residents, local businesses NYC, others)?
Preserving Gate 2 would create a dignified monument to the rich history of the Bronx, the Yankees and all that happened within Yankee Stadium's once majestic confines. Commemorating such a celebrated piece of history as a grand entrance to Heritage Field would also serve to make the monument a sort of Arch of Triumph for the borough of The Bronx and would most definitely be a tourist destination, encouraging significant business to many local establishments all year long. Indeed, it could be made a focal point of the community off season enhancing local business revenues.
What is the structural integrity of Gate 2 and what would it take to preserve it as a permanent monument?
The current structural integrity of historic Gate 2 is sound and could be preserved by using existing steel and concrete supports as well as constructing some minimal newer bracing to ensure its safety and stability for many years to come. This bracing would not interfere with the monument itself and would be limited to a very discrete amount of new materials. Made of super-hard Edison Portland cement, Gate 2 is almost indestructible.
-How much will this cost to preserve and then maintain?
Assessments from several architects and structural engineering firms have determined this would be a fairly simple/straightforward project and estimated that the cost would be a small fraction (less than 2%) of the overall cost to reconstruct the original stadium and build the replacement parklands. The Gate as a free standing structure would require minimal on-going maintenance.
-What is the Yankees position and role in this?
To date, the Yankees have declined to comment on the proposal. The parklands replacement is a NYC Parks effort and responsibility.
-Who has been approached and contacted already?

The Case for Derek Jeter, MVP
SEPTEMBER 2, 2009, 6:17 P.M. ET
The Case for Derek Jeter, MVP
By ALLEN BARRA
In the movie industry, many recipients get an Oscar years after they really deserve one, and often as a kind of lifetime achievement award. Paul Newman, for instance, took one home in 1987 for his performance in "The Color of Money," and Martin Scorsese in 2007 for directing "The Departed." Both could just as easily have been given the Academy Award several times earlier in their careers. Baseball's Most Valuable Player awards are no different, and the New York Yankees' Derek Jeter might well wind up as baseball's Paul Newman for the 2009 season.
Associated Press
The Yankees currently have the best record in the major leagues, and many observers think the primary reason is Mr. Jeter, who, at age 35, has rebounded from a subpar 2008 season to one of his best years ever. He's done it against all expectations—no team with a 35-year-old starting shortstop has won a World Series since the Yankees with Phil Rizzuto in 1953.
Mr. Jeter has been batting at or around .330 since spring, and—with about 30 games still to play—he has hit more home runs than in any season since 2005. He is running the bases as he did years ago, with a stolen-base success rate of more than 80%. His critics have always focused on his fielding, where by most objective yardsticks he has ranked as mediocre or worse.
But this year, according to John Dewan, author of "The Fielding Bible," "Derek Jeter is having the best year defensively since I began tracking him with defensive metrics in 2003."
No one would argue that Mr. Jeter's statistics are better than those of Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer, the current favorite in the MVP sweepstakes, who is leading the American League in batting (around .370), on-base percentage and slugging average. For that matter, there are several players, particularly Detroit's Miguel Cabrera, who are outhitting Mr. Jeter in batting average and have better power numbers.
The case for Mr. Jeter as American League MVP is being made by more subjective arguments. "How do you measure the value of inspiration and professionalism?" asks Marty Appel, author of "Munson: The Life and Death of a Yankee Captain." "Some people will argue that intangibles don't exist, but in the ninth inning of close games everybody believes in them."
Thurman Munson's and Mr. Jeter's personalities were different; Munson was surly and pugnacious, while Mr. Jeter still projects the image of boyish enthusiasm he had as a rookie in 1995. But, says Mr. Appel, the two share one important characteristic: "They both lead by example and performance. They helped make their teams better just by being there. No one ever slacked off with either of those guys on the field." To which Mike Ozanian of Forbes.com adds: "Jeter has been the anchor on a team that could have been derailed by injuries to key players like Alex Rodriguez. Winning has to count for something."
Winning and consistency have been Mr. Jeter's trademarks throughout his 14 seasons as a Yankee starter. He's been the linchpin for six pennant and four World Series winners. The Yankees have been the winningest team in baseball since he was given the shortstop's job, and are the odds-on favorites to go all the way this year. He has more hits than any shortstop ever, having passed Luis Aparicio a few weeks ago, and he will soon pass Lou Gehrig on the all-time Yankees hit list. He is on pace to threaten Pete Rose's all-time record of 4,256 career hits.
And yet Mr. Jeter has never been voted the MVP. In 1999, most baseball analysts thought that the Yankee, who batted .349 with 24 home runs and a league-leading 219 hits, was the best player. But sportswriters chose Texas catcher Ivan Rodriguez. In 2006, the analysts again favored Mr. Jeter, who batted .343 and stole 34 bases, but the writers went with Minnesota first baseman Justin Morneau.
"I think there's always been a bit of resentment toward Derek outside of New York, where he is worshipped," says Dave Fleming of Bill James Online. "There's an assumption that New York players have an unfair advantage when it comes to MVP voting, but in the case of Jeter and other New York ballplayers like the Mets' Carlos Beltran, I think you might say there's a counterargument: namely, that to play in New York might cost you votes."
So, if Mr. Jeter does slip by Mr. Mauer for this year's award, who's to say it isn't fair after all? And who's to say Paul Newman didn't deserve that Academy Award in 1987?
Still, there is a question as to whether the MVP award really means all that much to Derek Jeter. As he put it on Aug. 23 after the Yankees beat the Red Sox—a victory that Mr. Jeter paced by hitting a home run on the game's first pitch off Boston ace Josh Beckett—"I'm not thinking about winning any awards right now. The only award that matters is that fifth World Series ring."
